Toxic gases are produced by all heating units whether they use wood, oil, propane or other fuel sources and therefore it is important to have a qualified professional service your furnace or stove each year. To help keep your chimney in great shape make sure it is cleaned on a regular basis and checked for a build up of creosote. All connecting pipes should be cleaned as well; checking for rust and making sure all joints fit together snugly and are properly secured by at least three metal screws at each joint.

It is also important to ensure that the liner is in good repair. If there are signs of rust, seams that are separating or collapse of the interior then your liner will need to be replaced. Also check all ductwork, heating vents and registers as dust or other combustibles may have collected on your heating elements. Exhaust systems need to be checked for blockages and must have proper clearances to allow toxic gases to escape from your home.
