Properly installed and maintained smoke detectors will alert you in the event there is a fire but it is also a wise idea to install a carbon monoxide detector to detect toxic gases and deadly fumes. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, invisible gas that you may not be aware of until it is too late. The effects of inhaling moderate amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) mixed with carbon dioxide (CO2) could be headache, nausea, dizziness, irritability and confusion. If you breathe in too much of this deadly mixture of toxic gases you will vomit, lose consciousness, suffer brain damage and die.

A carbon monoxide detector can be hardwired into your electrical system and should be placed in your furnace and laundry rooms and any other room containing a heating unit.
