About Our Keynote Speaker - Silver Don Cameron
Silver Donald Cameron is one of Canada's most versatile and experienced professional authors.
His work includes plays, films, radio and TV scripts, an extensive body of corporate and governmental writing, hundreds of magazine articles and 16 books, including two novels.
His non-fiction subjects include history, travel, literature, politics, nature and the environment, community development, ships and the sea.
His books have received the Evelyn Richardson Award, the Atlantic Provinces Booksellers Award, and the City of Dartmouth Book Award.
His TV drama Peggy was named Best Short Film at the Canadian Film Celebration and the Moonsnail Awards, and was also a Gemini Award finalist.
His magazine articles have received four National Magazine Awards.
Four of his radio dramas have been ACTRA Award finalists; The Sisters (available on CD) was also nominated for the international Prix Italia.
He has also won a Mercury Award and a Wilmer Shields Award for corporate writing.
He has been Writer-in-Residence at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, the University of Prince Edward Island, and the University College of Cape Breton.
He has been a member of numerous Canada Council juries, and has served as a consultant to many corporate, governmental and non-profit clients, including four federal departments, five provincial departments, Maritime Life, Maritime Tel and Tel, the Canadian Conference of the Arts and the J. W. McConnell Family Foundation.
Dr. Cameron is also a distinguished educator, having served as the first Dean of the School of Community Studies at the University College of Cape Breton.
He previously taught at Dalhousie University, the University of British Columbia and the University of New Brunswick.
He holds a B.A. from U.B.C., an M.A. from University of California, and a Ph.D. from the University of London, England.
In 2004 he received an honourary Doctor of Civil Law degree from the University of Kings College.
Dr. Cameron was the founding Chairman of Telile, Isle Madame's community television station, and was also a founding director of Development Isle Madame.
He has served as Vice Chairman of the Writers Union of Canada, a director of North Isle Madame Credit Union and the first Executive Director of Centre Bras d'Or in Baddeck, N.S.
He owns and operates two companies, Paper Tiger Enterprises Ltd. and Arichat Apartment Rentals Ltd.
Silver Donald Cameron is married to Marjorie Simmins, who is also an award-winning writer.
The couple resides chiefly in D'Escousse, Cape Breton. Dr. Cameron has five adult children.

Leader: Stu Kedwell, RBC Asset Management Stu Kedwell is the Senior Vice-President and Co-Head of the Canadian
Equity Committee. He began his career with RBC Dominion Securities in
1996 as a member of the firm's Generalist program where he acquired
experience across all aspects of the firm's business including the
Fixed Income, Equity Research, Corporate Finance and Private Client
divisions. He later joined the RBC Investments Portfolio Advisory
Group which provides investment ideas and recommendations to RBC DS
Investment Advisors.
Stu is a key member of the RBC Investment Strategy Committee, a group
of senior investment professionals from across RBC that is led by Dan
Chornous, Chief Investment Officer at RBC Asset Management. The view
of the committee is reflected in asset allocation recommendations
across all lines of the wealth management business at RBC.
Stu has been with RBC Asset Management since 2002.

Stephen Scullion, B.Sc, FCIP, CRM, CLA, Dip.Ad.Ed. – Crawford Canada
Steve graduated from the University of Toronto with his degree in
biology and, obviously, was meant to be an adjuster. He began his
adjusting career in 1985with State Farm Insurance. He became an
independent adjuster with Adjusters Canada Inc in 1989 and is licensed
to handle any type of insurance claim in Ontario. He was the manager
of the Adjusters Canada Oshawa, Ontario office until their merger with
Crawford and Company in 1999.
In March 2001, Steve took up a new position as Manager of Professional
Development with Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. working out of the
Kitchener Head Office. Steve became Director of Professional
Development with Crawford in April of 2007. Steve has been part of the
Crawford Catastrophe team and has done tours of duty in Montreal,
Edmonton and the Bahamas.
Steve has been involved in the handling of sensitive issues such as
the Walkerton, Ontario E. coli situation, the Plastimet Class Action
out of Hamilton, Ontario, the 2004 Royal Bank Process Disruption
Redress Program, and field manager of the Ontario Disaster Relief
Assistance Plan which handled flood claims in Peterborough in the
summer of 2004.
Steve’s instructing career began in 1990 when he started teaching
Insurance Institute of Canada courses. These now include; Principles
and Practice of Insurance, Insurance Against Liability 1, Automobile
Insurance Part 1, Insurance on Property 1, Essentials of Loss
Adjusting, Advanced Loss Adjusting and Practical Issues in Claims
Management. He is a cited contributor to the 3 claims stream core
courses that now are mandatory for the CIP designation.
Steve has also designed and taught several in-house course for
Crawford & Company (Canada) Inc. including multi-day general claims,
casualty loss and property loss schools.
Steve earned his certificate and diploma in adult education from St.
Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
He earned his Canadian Risk Manager designation in 2005. With a wife
and 2 teenage daughters, Steve is in desperate need of advice and help
as he is actually beginning to take an interest in bed skirts and how

Keegan Iles is a Senior Associate in the Advisory Services Group in
our Toronto office. Keegan has over 4 years of consulting and
facilitation experience in the financial services sector. Keegan has
been involved in a number of finance effectiveness engagements where
he has assisted clients in transforming their finance function through
business process reengineering. Keegan works closely with suppliers,
vendors and financial institutions to design and implement lasting,
sustainable change in their businesses. These engagements have
emphasized Keegan's proficiency in finance and operational
effectiveness methodologies, facilitation skills as well as more
broadly his understanding of the financial services and change
management.

Lisa Mitchell – LJM Environmental
Lisa Mitchell is a lawyer (Dalhousie, 1991) and principal of LJM
Environmental Consulting. She has a Masters of Environmental Studies
from the School for Resource and Environmental Studies (Dalhousie,
1994), and fifteen years of experience working in the areas of
environmental law, policy and environmental management.
Lisa's law practice is exclusively in the area of environmental law.
She has developed a broad¬ ranging practice base that includes
governments, non-government organizations, private-sector companies
and individual clients. The foundation of her legal experience is in
the design and drafting of regulatory tools and the communication of
those tools to stakeholders and interested parties. Her expertise in
this area originated in the challenging field of agri-environmental
law and has expanded to include contaminated sites, environmental
impact assessment, water regulation and other areas.
Lisa has provided advice and training on environmental legislation and
policy in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador,
Prince Edward Island and Ontario. She is familiar with the legislative
frameworks that address environmental concerns in all of these
jurisdictions however she has an intimate knowledge of the Nova Scotia
framework based on her role in the development and review of the Nova
Scotia Environment Act in 1994 and 2000. Lisa's legislative drafting
experience and knowledge of environmental legislation also encompasses
the federal jurisdiction. She has completed numerous drafting and
training projects with Environment Canada and other federal
departments and agencies. Lisa is a member of the Board of Directors
for the East Coast Environmental Law Association and serves on the
Environmental Planning and Assessment Caucus of the Canadian
Environmental Network.
Agriculture Specific
Working with the agricultural sector throughout Atlantic Canada, Lisa
served as a coordinator and instructor for the environmental farm
plan program in Nova Scotia and provided expert advice on this program
in PEI, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. She has provided numerous
presentations on the role of environmental management systems in
reducing legal liability on farms. Lisa prepares a regular newsletter
for Farm Credit Canada addressing environmental compliance and
regulatory issues in the agricultural sector.

John Taylor – OMIA
John began his career in the insurance industry after graduating with
a business degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo Ontario.
John worked as a licensed adjuster for Adjusters Canada in Guelph,
Ontario from 1986 to 2000, handling all lines losses including major
residential, commercial, and agricultural claims.
He was appointed branch manager of the Guelph office in 1995. In 2000
John became the manager of Crawford's professional development group
with a focus on training and education and career development for
claims professionals. His training background includes teaching both
claims technical and management courses. He also taught at Crawford
University in Atlanta to assist claims adjusters preparing to respond
to losses from Hurricane Katrina.
John became Vice President of Human Resources for Crawford Canada in
2006. He also acted as the project manager for the Walkerton Class
Action claims administration that dealt with over 10,000 claims
arising from the Walkerton tainted water tragedy.
In late 2008 John accepted the position of President of the Ontario
Mutual Insurance Association.
John holds designations including his FCIP, CRM, Certified Human
Resource Professional, and Chartered Loss Adjuster.
He lives in Rockwood Ontario with his wife Linda and three children.

Carolyn Pletsch
Carolyn Pletsch has a background in business development, human
resource development, training and development consulting, program
evaluation, and project management. She has 15 years of general
management experience largely in co-operative and non-profit sectors,
most recently as the Executive Director of the Ontario Agricultural
Training Institute. She currently consults nationally as a board of
director's trainer and in other matters related to governance and was
recently contracted by Canada's regional development agencies to
co-author a working paper on governance for the Organization for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Carolyn has a Masters degree in Continuing Education and Human
Resource Development from the University of Calgary, a Certificate in
Human Resource Management from the Human Resource Professionals
Association of Ontario and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Rural
Studies at the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development,
University of Guelph. The focus of her research is rural governance
practice. Carolyn expects to finish her PhD at some point in 2009.

Sue Baker joined the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association (OMIA) in
January of 1986. Sue is the manager of our Insurance Services
Department. She and the other department staff coordinate our broadly
based training program, conduct training sessions, develop information
pieces and insurance coverage documents and are responsible for our
collective marketing efforts. Sue lives in the rural area of Centre
Wellington.
